Teachers have long recognized the need for an improved method of teaching spelling. Students can successfully memorize their spelling words for the customary weekly quiz but often they do not transfer this knowledge to their writing. The ultimate purpose of spelling is accurate writing. Volumes of research has been conducted on spelling and word study. Researchers such as Fountas, Bear, Ivernizzi, Dickerson, and Gill along with method experts such as Patricia Cunningham and Marie Carbo began to apply the data collected to instructional method. The data suggested that along with stages in spelling, children spelling when multiple activities were used. Word Study (working with words) allowed learners to learn to use words in context, see words within words, and transfer that learning into writing. It became evident that stages and development were consistent all over the world when native Spanish and French speakers were added to the mix. Yes, learners in other countries develop spelling behaviors, just as we do! We are proud of our word study program. Our academic strength and learner successes are well documented.
